Volunteering is a wonderful way to give back to the community. It lets us put good into the world, even when we don’t have any funds to spare. Yet most people picture volunteering as boring or dry or have other negative stereotypical thoughts preventing them from volunteering.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of ways to give back to the community through volunteering. Best of all, given the sheer variety of options available, finding something within your niche or interest is entirely possible. Here are a few volunteering ideas to get you started.

Visit a Senior Center

Nursing homes are places many of us like to avoid. They make us sad and fearful for what is to come. But think about the people living there – they are lonely and would love some company! Consider spending some of your valuable time at senior centers, giving back to the community by spending time with those who need it.

Help Animals in Your Community

Did you know that you can volunteer at local animal shelters and sometimes even farms? The truth is that there are animals in your community right now that could use a helping hand. Shelters almost always need new dog walkers or people to come by and clean out cages. Alternatively, you can sign up as a foster parent, which means you take in animals until they find a more permanent home.

Volunteer at a Charity Shop

Some charities and nonprofit organizations will run stores and need volunteers to keep them running. If you don’t mind what is essentially retail work, consider volunteering at a location like this.

Local Cleaning Events

Most public spaces need some help getting (and staying) clean. For example, local parks and beaches almost always have lots of litter. Consider cleaning up the garbage on your own time. Alternatively, you can join a cleaning initiative or start one yourself.

Build Houses

You’ve likely heard of Habitat for Humanity, an organization that helps build homes for those that need it most. Organizations such as these always need a helping hand (or ten), so if you like working with your hands, this is a great way to help.

Establish a Free Library

Okay, this one might not feel like volunteering, but it will significantly help your community. Little Free Library is a massive organization of like-minded people – they build and offer free little libraries in neighborhoods. This may be your opportunity if you live in a heavy foot-traffic area and have books to spare.
